DEMERARA Distillers Limited (DDL) under its Topco Juices brand came on board to sponsor the final one-day Rapid Chess tournament of this year which will be held on Sunday, December 30, at the Kei-shar’s Sports Club, from 10:00hrs.
DDL Sales Manager Alexis Langhorne yesterday presented the sponsorship cheque of $40 000 to Shiv Nandalall, president of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) at the tournament venue and stated that her company was very pleased to have worked with the federation on hosting the tournaments. “It is our way of developing the sport and the players,” she remarked. She stated that tournaments assist local players to move on and compete at an international level. “DDL under its Topco brand has been sponsoring Chess for the past five years and I look forward to working with the federation in hosting future tournaments,” she concluded. Nandalall extended gratitude to the company for its unbroken commitment and praised its input for the continued growth of the game. “Sponsorship is an important ingredient in the entire process and chess needs to maintain the goodwill and confidence of the sponsors,” Nandalall said. Trophies, cash prizes and medals are at stake. A special prize will be awarded to the Best Under-16 player. The tournament consists of seven rounds and each player would have 20 minutes on the clock during each round. The Guyana Chess Federation would be conducting the one-day competition and all senior and junior chess players are invited to participate. Registration begins at 09:00hrs. |
