Persaud retains Reagan Rodrigues Memorial title PDF Print E-mail

NATIONAL cyclist Robin Persaud made it two in a row yesterday when he rode off with the winner's trophy in this year's eighth annual Reagan Rodrigues Memorial 50-mile cycle road race. The event which pedaled off at Wales Police Station proceeded to Bushy Park and ended at the Demerara Harbour Bridge. It is held annually in memory of Rodrigues who was the founder of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club  and former president of the Guyana Cycling Federation.
Persaud stopped the clock at one hour, 52 minutes and 41 seconds after his start which was approximately eight minutes better than his time last year.
Another Carlton Wheelers cyclist Raynauth Jeffrey, who is a junior, finished second overall but retained his junior title. Persaud and Jeffrey also copped a sprint prize each.
Junior rider Paul DeNobrega, Jude Bentley, Alonzo Greaves and Lindener Rastaff O'Selmo rounded out the top six.
Bentley copped three sprint prizes while two went to Greaves and one to DeNobrega.
Meanwhile, in the veteran’s category Talim Shaw took the top honours ahead of Shameer Bashk and Ravendra Ramnarine respectively.
Walter Isaacs finished first in the Over-60 cateogry to retain his title while in the Boys and Girls mixed event, Naomi Singh took the winning spoils ahead of Alfie Sonaram.
At the presentation ceremony, the winners and runners up were presented with food hampers and trophies by members of Rodrigues' family and representatives of Ricks and Sari, the company that sponsored the event.
Present at the ceremony and making brief remarks were National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed and Director of Sport, Neil Kumar.
