Dr. David Hinds is a well known Professor of Political Science based at a North American University. But he is better known as a militant political activist on the Working People’s Alliance party platform, whose activism, so to speak, was precisely fashioned during the days of the brutal PNC/R dictatorship that recalls the likes of Tacuma Ogunseye and the renowned historian Dr. Walter Rodney, battling against the steel of the
Burnhamite oppression. Rodney paid with his life, and all Guyanese will remember this great sacrifice. Hinds and all those who fought against State oppression at that time must also be saluted for their heroic efforts during that very dark period of Guyana’s post Independence history. But one must now take issue with this particular activist, with regard the well known accusation of marginalization of the African segment of the Republic of Guyana. This contention, became the standing mantra of the political opposition, particularly the PNC/R, and other persons and groups known for their outright hostility to the PPP/C government. In fact, it has been used so often by these diverse persons in their accusations against the government, that it has become worn, hollow and empty – not that it ever had any real substance. Surprisingly, this activist made this very baseless and much discredited accusation during his oration at the recent funeral service for the three Linden townspeople. Again, my honest conscience dictate that the accusation is totally unfounded and without merit, and constituted another attempt by Dr. Hinds and those of similar, jaundiced thinking to play to a gallery that is being led along the path of extremes that can only cause more harm to a once-proud community. Briefly, though, one ought not to be constantly repetitive, the word “marginalization” describes a peripheral existence, which in plain terms, means living on the edge of daily life. But, this cannot, in all truth be ascribed to the African Guyanese segment. Let us all be honest: Socially, there are more black professionals at this time of the nation’s history, more than ever. In fact, most have been the recipients of State Scholarships for overseas training in the fields of medicine, engineering and other scientific forms; one must also include the thousands of Africo Guyanese who have been graduating from the local tertiary institution, as well as other allied centres of learning. These newly qualified Afro Guyanese use their academic acquisition for upward social mobility, and many have succeeded, and are continuing to do so. Armed with this new found ability to improve oneself, one will also be able to discern the numerous numbers of blacks, of very young age, too, who are now the owners of very expensive motor vehicles, as well as proud home owners. And with regard to the latter, thousands of Afro Guyanese have benefitted from a grand government housing programme, as the other major race has. One can continue in this discourse to expose the shallowness of this dangerous incitement by Hinds; but thank heavens, that Guyanese, Africans especially, generally, are a much wiser people now, who would have gained from the numerous socio-economic interventions that have improved their daily lives. |
