Robinson leads Windwards fight but Barbados hold upper hand PDF Print E-mail

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Windward Islands captain Jerlani Robinson sparkled with a boundary-studded half-century but Barbados held the upper hand at the end of the first day of the opening round of the Regional Under-19 Championship here yesterday. Dominican Robinson, batting at number three, clobbered 75 off 110 balls with nine fours and a six to be the mainstay of the Windwards’ first innings 206 all out after they opted to bat first at Queen’s Park.
At the close, Barbados were responding strongly on 122 for two with captain Shai Hope unbeaten on 44 and debutant Kemar Brathwaite on 40 not out.
They require a further 85 runs for first innings lead.
From the relative comfort of 121 for four at lunch, the Windwards innings spiralled as Barbadian spinners Aaron Jones and Chad Williams ran through the lower half of the visitors’ batting, the last four wickets tumbling in 14 balls for the addition of four runs.
Williams, in a marathon 18-over spell of left arm orthodox spin, took three for 41 and Jones, who got rid of the rampant Robinson in the final over before the lunch break, captured four for 24 from seven overs in three separate spells of right-arm leg-spin.
Earlier medium pacer Darnell Greenidge (2-29) provided the hosts with the perfect start, removing both opening batsmen within the first nine overs with the new ball.
Robinson then dominated a 56-run third-wicket stand with Taryck Gabriel (13) to revive the Windwards’ fortunes.
However, despite promising partnerships of 38 for the fourth wicket between the skipper and Roland Cato (29), and 39 between Cato and wicketkeeper Horlis Blair (33) for the fifth wicket, Williams and Jones undermined the rest of the line up.
Windwards, too, managed to get rid of the Barbadian opening pair in quick order but Hope and Brathwaite solidified the locals’ strong position with their unbeaten stand that has so far yielded 81 runs.
